Germany’s study of competitive conditions in the mobile market

The Bundesnetzagentur, Germany’s regulatory authority, has taken a significant step towards promoting competition in the mobile market. In collaboration with the provision of spectrum, the authority has commissioned a comprehensive study to evaluate competitive conditions.

Klaus Müller, President of the Bundesnetzagentur, emphasized the importance of fostering competition through spectrum regulation. He stated that the assessment of competitive conditions would be unbiased and forward-looking, ensuring a fair and competitive landscape.

Things to note

To carry out the study, the Bundesnetzagentur has engaged two prominent consulting firms: WIK-Consult GmbH and Ernst & Young GmbH. Their task is to compile a report on the existing competitive conditions in the mobile market.

The study’s outcomes will play a crucial role in the future provision of spectrum, particularly in the 800 MHz, 1,800 MHz, and 2,600 MHz bands. The objective is to identify whether additional measures are necessary to preserve or establish effective competition in Germany’s mobile market, based on the insights from the report.

The consultants are set to begin their market surveys promptly. Furthermore, the Bundesnetzagentur welcomes input from all interested stakeholders in shaping the study’s evaluation of competitive conditions. Interested market players can reach out directly to WIK-Consult GmbH or the Bundesnetzagentur to contribute to the study.

The findings of the study are expected to be unveiled this autumn, providing crucial insights that will guide the Bundesnetzagentur’s decisions concerning spectrum provision and promoting fair competition in the mobile market.
